73 at last!

Thursday was my birthday, and Megan led the kids in singing to me.  I always lead the singing myself because it is easier than staring down at my shoes and weaving back and forth looking embarrassed.  The imagination project was a paper butterfly.  It was propelled by a rubber band inside it.  I had practiced last night but couldn’t get it to fly.  The kids were able to do it, however.  The theme was “no matter what people do…. Trust God.  People do many things to us, but we must trust God to protect us.  We didn’t do much the rest of the day but go to Shoney’s for a buffet lunch.  I had tried to go to a restaurant in Maggie Valley, but it was not open until 4:30.  We just spent the evening at home watching a movie.

It is quite a surprise to reflect on being old.  I don’t think any of us can anticipate the feeling of being old.  I joke that I am approaching old age but know I have reached the plateau.  It is truly a gift from God to be old despite the aches I have in my left leg, the slow decline of my memory, and lack of energy.  I know that the friends I had when younger that are dead would rather be old—unless they are celebrating eternity with Jesus.  People will jokingly say that being old beats the alternative.  They have never thoughts much about the glories of being in Heaven with our Lord.

Friday was the final day of VBS.  We had another experiment in blowing bubbles.  They kids enjoyed it more than we anticipated.  We had also thought we should have some backup activities, so Evelyn made some playdo.  We had them make something that reminded them of an event.  Unfortunately she had made different colors.  In our younger group, a trauma developed.  The pastor’s daughter and another 6 year old boy wanted the same wad.  She claimed the boy had taken it out of her hand.  We didn’t see it but know he could have done that.  She screamed and bawled for 20 minutes even though he offered to share it with her.  We finished our cleanup and came home.  It was very hot so we stayed inside most of the day and evening.  We had thought of going to the pickin in the park at Canton but decided to stay home to watch a movie because it was just coming down from a high of 97 in the shade.  The movie was an off the wall movie by Woody Allen.
