in a handbasket

It is truly a strange age in which we live.  Just before we left Texas, a show we watch featured an episode in which 2 men (married to each other) were concerned about getting a kidnapped son of theirs back from kidnappers.  Tonight the show that spawned it featured a male married couple who were separated by one of their being murdered.  During to the episodes a commercial announcement showed 2 women adopting a deaf girl, telling her “We are your new mommies.”  DWTS and the NFL celebrate being leaders in featuring an openly practicing Sodomite.  Our Supreme Court is debating on legalizing same sex marriage in our land.  We should all be praying for these people to recognize that Christ loves them and would like them to accept His forgiveness.  He wants each of us to love and serve Him and the escalator to Heaven—and avoid the handbasket.

countless blessings

First, my preaching has been a blessing to me and evidently the congregation.  We began with 21 in November and had 39 this past Sunday.  I have seen that several people have been strengthened in their faith through the message God has given to me to pass to them.  Second, Evelyn has finally recovered from her airborn virus that she got just after Thanksgiving.  It took about 6 weeks, but God finally granted her healing.  Third, our eldest grandson has arrived safely in Hong Kong where he is studying math.   We thank God for His mercy in allowing him to travel safely and be excited in his opportunity.  Fourth, I have been blessed to, as a Gideon, distribute New Testaments.   to 5th graders in a local elementary school and will assist in delivering more at a different school tomorrow.  Evelyn and I spent the morning learning about 2 mission outreaches right here in Texas.  One of them ministers to oilfield workers extracting oil from shale neat Kenedy Texas and the area around it in central Texas.  The other ministers to inner city minorities in Houston and other urban areas, mostly in Texas.  It is quite a blessing to be able to support organizations like that.

We have had a cool, overcast winter overall thus far until the past couple of days.  The sun has emerged and the high temperatures have been in the low 80s.  I have played golf only once but haven’t really missed it.  I thought I was going to work at one of the local courses as a ranger, but the job fell through after just one afternoon.  We have essentially dropped out of the activities in our park.  We would like to sell our trailer but can’t seem to attract many lookers.  We have spent 14 years in this same dwelling and have had little success in making any good friends.  We used to volunteer to work in many activities, have hosted several parties, and have had many dinner parties, but few have reciprocated in any way.  We have had few invitations to either dinners or even invitations to have a beer with anyone.  l would like to either move to a different part of Texas or at least into another park.  But of course we can’t do that unless we sell this one.

One couple who are winter Texans and live in a different park have been our most frequent friends.  They are from Wisconsin, and he plays piano for our worship service most of the season.  They love to play dominoes more than anything, and we spend time with them in both our houses.  We also go to some high school plays with them as well as some afternoon dances.  They are also garage sale fanatics, but we don’t accompany them in that arena.  Another couple who are good friends have lived here all their lives.  They are members of the church where we have a membership.  We go to a concert series 6 times each season in McAllen.  We always go out to dinner with them before the concert.  We also exchange dinners in our respective homes and play some cards with them.  The man is an engineer and is 6 weeks older than I but hasn’t retired.   She is the organist for the church where we are members.  They have a huge garden (remember some of the major growing season is during the winter months at this latitude), and just this last week they shared several varieties of lettuce, Swiss chard, and spinach with us.  The only other lasting friends are a couple who live in Rio Hondo.   He farms 3000 plus acres.  Our wives met 16 years ago I a Bible study and, ironically, sat next to each other in a small group.  They had the same last name and have been friends since.  We are only able to get together with them 3 or 4 times each winter because he is always busy with some farm activities, but in 2014 we were together for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.  He has several Hispanics working for him on the farm, but loaned one of them to do some work on our unit.

It is these few people who have become lasting friends and will be missed if we leave, but we leave our future in the hands of our loving Lord.  He knows what He wants us to do, and, since is our Creator and Savior, we will serve Him wherever He wants.

God’s great Good News

Despite Evelyn’s being ill with an air borne disease, causing extreme coughing, we had to keep an appointment with a dermatologist Tuesday at noon.  We arrived just a bit early, thinking we would be waiting about half an hour.  The first blessing was that we were ushered in directly to the room where the biopsy was to be done.  The doctor came into the room where the nurse had prepared the anesthetic syringe to deaden the spot on her right shoulder.  The doctor looked at the spot and said, “If you would rather heal this yourself, it is all right with me.”  What a pleasant surprise blessing!  We rushed off praising God for His mercy.  We went to the grocery to get a turkey breast for me to smoke for our Christmas dinner.  We had gone out for lunch but brought the groceries home just before the woman from the golf car repair garage came to deliver our car.  We had to buy 4 new batteries for around $800.  I had to wait to test it out.   We have been staying at home much of the time this winter.  We have only about 2 close friends and can’t be with them all the time.  Besides Evelyn has not felt very strong.  She has been working on the cupcakes for the LWML Christmas party this coming Thursday but rests quite a bit.   In the meantime, we noticed a different sound in the car.   I took the Cadillac to have the transmission checked.   After all, the warranty would run out in 2,000 more miles.  On the way to the dealership, I went to get some marked down pork so I could smoke it with the turkey breast.  I came home with a loaner car and prepared the Brinkman smoker for my Christmas project.  It turned our quite well.  Evelyn went to the church with Bonny to prepare for tomorrow’s party for the children at the school.  We still praise God for all He does for us.

Double duty

I had been called earlier in the week by Llano Grande asking me to substitute for a pastor who had other obligations he couldn’t get out of.  He had been scheduled to preach there, so I agreed to replace him.  I normally go there 2 times each year and I substitute whenever they need me.  I just conduct my regular worship and then drive the 5 miles to that park.  My message was a bit longer than usual and we celebrated Holy Communion, making me late for the service.  In former years I just went to the stage via a side door, but today they waited for me to arrive.   I was 6 minutes late, making them sweat bullets.  They have been good to me and I appreciate them and feel obligated to help them.  Ironically, I am scheduled there again December 28.  We went to the local Popeye’s for lunch and then returned home for the rest of the day.  Evelyn is feeling a bit better, but I am still concerned.  She still shakes when holding anything and gets dizzy right after using the nebulizer.  I was really lazy all day.  I usually begin work on next week’s message but didn’t today.

A siege of illness

Evelyn has been ill for a while.  First, she has been concerned about a red spot on her right shoulder.  It is about the size of a dime but doesn’t seen to be getting smaller.  We went to an appointment with a dermatologist who said he should take a biopsy.   We have the appointment for Tuesday December 9 in Weslaco.  It will be some time before the result will be returned from the lab.  She is at risk because of her having beast cancer some years ago.   After learning that, we went to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with our friends, Don and Janice Waters at their home in Rio Hondo.  Their son, wife and 4 grandchildren were there too.   The oldest grandson plays on the local football team which was in a state tournament, and we agreed to go see him play on Saturday.   We met them and drove 80 miles to Kingsville for the game.  It was warm but breezy.  The game was not vey good and our team lost.  The big disappointment, however, was that Evelyn  must have picked some virus blowing in the air.  By Sunday evening she began to get sick.  Monday morning, she was too sick to get out of bed.  The same thing Tuesday.  She took some acetomedephen but didn’t have much relief.  I have never seen her so helpless and weak.  I took care of the meals and everything for 2 days.  Finally, I convinced her to go to the doctor.  She has to use a nebulizer and takes some prednisone.  She became dizzy after the treatments and shakes when she holds things.  I think she will have to  return to see about these side effects.  I also got a call from Llano Grande park asking me to substitute for a pastor that had to cancel.  I like to preach there after my regular service and have been able to meet several of the people who worship there.  I just finished preparations and am not satisfied.

Back to preaching

We have been here for nearly 3 weeks now and just got our unit washed today.  It was to have been done last week, but the man who does it, Bhudda, doesn’t work when it is cold.  It was in the 60s all last week.  It is good to have it done because 2 for sale advertisements come out this week.  We have been dancing only once since we arrived.  We did have to go to Mission to have some recall work done on our car.  We have been worshipping in McAllen, but my worship service began this past Sunday.  I like the pastor at Church of the King McAllen and have learned a great deal about the suffering that lies ahead of all Christians.  It is just beginning in the Middle East.  The pastor, Ron Smith, has a great talent in blending politics and Scripture.  We have been doing things with John and Sue Hamel when we aren’t working in the house or on my messages.  I have to print the Scripture readings, the order of service for us to follow, copy the Introit and prayers for the day.  I have to get these done ahead of time because John, our accompanist, needs to practice the hymns, so he has to have them a week ahead of time.  Evelyn caught a cold Saturday at a high school football game.  We had spent Thanksgiving with Don and Janice Waters and their son and grandchildren,  The oldest grandson plays guard on the local high school team that was still in the playoffs.  We agreed to go with them to the game Saturday.  It was a breezy day, and a germ must have blown into Evelyn.  She has been in bed all day, December 1.

Evelyn watching TV 2014-12-01 001

This is Evelyn watching TV as I write this.  She has been like this all day  and has coughed much of the time she is awake.  I don’t know why the picture is blurry.  My message this past Sunday was well received.  Even Evelyn was blessed by it.  It has been very pleasant for us here despite the locals being cold.   It is supposed to rain tonight but will probably be light as is usual.  It is also supposed to be in the 50s tomorrow.   I sent several e-cards to friends on Thanksgiving but have not heard from any of them.  I wonder if my emails are getting to anyone.  I have also sent some birthday and anniversary e-cards without response adding to my suspicions.

An eventful week: full of blessings

We left Waynesville with our trailer full and headed for Lexington to pick up Andrew.  We drove through a huge traffic jam in Cincinnati and on to Xenia.  We all stayed in the same room the next 3 nights.  The rest of the family didn’t arrive until the next evening, so we ate lunch at the Taco Bell.  We met everyone at the farm where the bride lived and enjoyed meeting everyone in the family.  Weirdly, due to divorces, there were 4 sets of grandparents.  No wonder I can’t remember any of them.  Noah and Abby paid for everyone’s dinner at a restaurant in the country.  We weren’t impressed with the offerings.  Stephen joined us in our bedroom for the next 2 nights.  In the morning we met for breakfast, dressed for the wedding, and went to the Christian hall where the wedding was held.  The rehearsal was around 10 and the wedding around 1.  It was not a traditional wedding but was deeply spiritual.  There was a sermon about Christian marriages and a dedication of their lives and marriage to Christ.   After the ceremony we enjoyed light snacks and desserts before going to the motel for another gathering with the family minus the bide and groom.  The interesting thing was that I had lost my money clip containing all my credit cards.  I looked at the Taco Bell, and even drove back to the restaurant thinking I might have left it there.  We couldn’t cancel the cards because we had to use Evelyn’s copies to travel south.  We turned Andrew over to Stacy and Tom headed for Atlanta, so we went on to Elizabethtown where I had reservations for the night.  I also had a coupon for a local restaurant but it was not open on Sunday evening.  In the morning we left for Birmingham to spend the second night.  It turned out that we were too far from the restaurant at the motel so we ate some left overs we had from lunch.  Both motels were very clean and modern.  We left there around 8:30 and ran into a huge traffic jam on I-59.  We were blessed to be near a rest area and crept a quarter mile to the entrance.  It was shortly after 9:15 (I had reset Evelyn’s watch to central time) and were in the rest area by 9:30.  We could walk around, use the rest rooms, and avoid burning our fuel.  Around 1:30 the highway patrol allowed the rest area crew to open an escape gate.  I was first in line because I had heard the officer give permission.  By now the traffic must have been backed up to Birmingham.    We were routed to a secondary highway that took up past the wreck of 2 18 wheelers and 3 cars that had wrecked in a construction zone.  We also heard there were multiple fatalities.  I had reservations in Lafayette, LA and we had to make it.  We had to drive 5 more hours, arriving after 8.  We stay at the same motel in Scott, LA twice each year, and the manager had promise me a Jacuzzi room when we left last year.  Evelyn used it the next morning.  We had a coupon for lunch at a Poorboy restaurant and had crawfish.  I invited Roland to meet us, but he never responded.  We did meet Jimmy and Betty for dinner at Randol’s where we visited and danced for a while.  It had become cold and rainy during the first night we were there and was raining most of the time we were there and when we left.  I picked up some boudin, crawfish tails and Andouille.  We were blessed again to find some jars of roux to use for making gumbo at home.  We drove on to Galveston where I had a coupon for lunch and then on to Corpus Christi where I thought I had reservations.  I guess I had made a mistake but was again blessed to be able to stay there anyway.  I also had a coupon and was surprised that we had driven past it on the way to the motel.  We drove back and enjoyed an Italian dinner.  We drove on to the Valley and were here by 2 PM.  as we were unpacking the trailer and the suitcases, I was blessed again when I found the money clip in the suitcase.  I had been checking each evening at the motels to see if anyone had been charging anything and now know why no one had used them.  We were blessed all the way here and thank God for His blessings.
