Quiet Day

Thursday began with a surprise. I received an invitation to an AARP driver safety meeting. I didn’t think I would learn anything, but the area coordinator thought I should go. We went to Harlingen and met from 10 until 2. I did learn some things but the meeting was not for our group. We always have a nice lunch, half of which I took home to Evelyn. We came back and I went to get the mail. I was tired and planned to take a nap but never got around to it. I can’t remember what I did. We had lunch and watched the Purdue women play basketball. Evelyn had said she wanted to go to a dance but never really got ready to go. We sent an e-mail to my friend who is planning our Panama Canal cruise in April. We realize that the entire trip will likely take more than a month by the time we return to New Orleans. We also watched Anger Management starring Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler. We also tried to organize our Christmas card list.

Work and music

Wednesday found us working more. Will we ever finish the outdoor decorations? Evelyn went to exercise and I got on the ladder to hang the outdoor lights. After they were hung, we noticed only about 1/3 of the lights worked. I also added a string of colored lights around our door garland because half of those lights didn’t work either. That is until I added the new string of lights. Then they worked. Evelyn came home and learned her appointment for a permanent had been moved up to 10:30, so we ate an early lunch and off she went. I decided it was not too hot to cut the grass, so I went to the neighbor’s to get the weed eater. We made a deal years ago that I could use his mower and weed eater. I put gas in it and did the necessary work with it. I then put gas into the mower and mowed what was left. I then took a shower. Evelyn came home and said that one of the neighbor’s had a problem and could not go to a concert in a series that they had bought season tickets for. They gave them to us. We dressed and went to one of the other two couple’s so we could ride together with them. They had decided to go to the I-Hop restaurant in Harlingen where the concert was to be held. We had dinner and went to the concert center and heard the Jimmy Dorsey band. It was a good concert, featuring all big band music from the 30’s,40’s and early 50‘s. We saw some Canadian friends there that had promised to invite us over sometime. This was two years ago. They gave us one of the “come over sometime” invitations. We really enjoyed the concert and the company we were with. I came home to watch the Purdue/Virginia basketball game I had taped. I got the entire game except the final 20 seconds. The game was tied but Purdue had the ball when the tape stopped! I had to watch some other sports news to get the score. What a frustrating hoot. Went to bed late.

Decorating for Christmas

Monday we went the town meeting and tried to listen to the announcements. The sound system is poor and matched with my hearing loss made my understanding almost nill. We came home and continued decorating our home for Christmas. We hung some items and put up the outdoor Nativity scene and the Christmas tree. We decorated some of it but have more to do. We rode our bikes up to a UPS store so I could mail some Steve Brown tapes to my Christian friend from high school, Bill Silvers. We were both captured by Christ at a Cursillo in different cities. We had a good visit at our 50th class reunion in June. After lunch, more decorating and then dinner. We have been eating less but not likely enough to lose weight. We are both overweight. We spent the evening watching Me, Myself, and Irene, a semi funny movie starring Jim Carey. What a limber fellow.

Tuesday was a morning of some work but mostly getting pictures taken for the upcoming park picture directory. Before that Evelyn talked with her brother about a family tragedy that happened in September. We posed for our picture at 10:15 and ordered a book for $16.23. We don’t need any more pictures of ourselves and neither does any member of our family. We left there and went to the Tuesday Bible study. We were late but had a good study anyway on the parables in Luke 14. We came home and finished preparation for the lunch of sausage and boudin sandwiches. An elderly couple from Immanuel likes boudin and so we wanted to share some of what we brought from Louisiana. We enjoyed our visit with them the day after his 87th birthday. We rode to our oncologist’s office to make another appointment for Evelyn. We were sure we had missed an appointment and were right. We made another for December 11 and then went to Knapp hospital to schedule our volunteer work. We will go to serve this Friday morning but will likely serve on Friday afternoons. We came home and worked a bit more before we rode around the park with the bike club. We came home and had popcorn while watching DVDs of old television shows and a grade D western.

Sunday, November 26

Sunday was a day of worship. The choir sang Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus and Go Now in Peace. Afterward Joe and Bonny took us out to the Wild Olive restaurant. We met the chef/owner and his wife last Christmas at a party with Joe and Bonny. We had received a letter announcing his grand opening while we were in NC. We had a great time catching up with the Winston’s. They started to come to NC but got only as far as Austin. They have a lot of family there. We came home about 2:30 and watched some football. (Oh, yes. When I was ready for church, I tuned to the computer and learned that Purdue had taken the lead in the game last night but still lost. At least they gave the number 25 ranked Hawaiian team a fight.) We brought out all of our Christmas decorations but did not work with them. We took a bike ride and went to the hall for ice cream. Evelyn rode over to see if Genny Durkin wanted to go to the CWC luncheon next week but found no one at home. We ate our ice cream and came home for popcorn and some more TV. This is the last Sunday I will have off for about four months, but I thank God for the opportunity to bring His message of love and forgiveness to the park.

Weedy times

Saturday was another bright, beautiful day. We went off to walk, but didn’t get far. We made the mistake of going into the hall where the Kitchen band was going to practice and we had talked about joining because they go to nursing homes to perform. We continued to take a short walk and came back to practice for an hour. We came home and worked a while before lunch. We finished up the delicious leftovers from last night. Then I went outside and pulled most of the weeds from in back of our unit. The grass and other weeds were more than 30 inches high. It was hard to pull them but easier after watering the earth around them. I did watch some football games as I came in and out of the house. Evelyn wanted to take a bike ride, so we rode around our park before returning for a light dinner. I watched some of the Notre Dame/USC game and went back and forth between that and Desperate Crossing, the story of the pilgrim’s coming to America that I had taped a couple of days ago. I wanted to stay awake until the Purdue/Hawaii football came on at 10. I thought it was being televised but was wrong. I decided to watch the game tracker on the internet and did until halftime when Purdue was behind 17-0. I can spend my time better by sleeping.

Many good friends

I got up Friday and went to find a ride to Harlingen to play golf. I found one and planned to meet the driver at 9. In the meantime I went to the hardware store to get some bargains. I was in such a hurry that I forgot to take enough money or my credit cards. I came home and sent Evelyn while I was playing golf. I played very poorly but was blessed in that an 87 year old man in our foursome kept the score and mixed our scores badly enough that I have no idea what my actual score was. I do know that I lost 4 balls. I got home earlier than I thought I would and had lunch of leftovers with Evelyn. I watched the Texas/Texas A&M football game and replaced the door closer on the back screen door. We dressed and left for our visit with our “cousins” in Rio Hondo. We stopped at the Wal-Mart in Harlingen and bought a poinsettia to give them. Janice had prepared beef enchiladas, charro beans, rice and an avocado salad. Evelyn had made a delicious cake for dessert. This meal was totally awesome. They are such good Christian friends. I invited them to our bowl party and think we can invite them here before that. We drove home and suffered the narrow lanes on the highway that is being reconstructed. It will be fantastic when completed but not pleasant while the work is being done. One blessing today was a Thanksgiving Day greeting from the young women I worked with at Taco Bell this past summer. I really appreciate the thoughts they expressed. I will try to send them something for Christmas. We also received cards from our daughters and their “younguns”. God has blessed us with many friends.

Pictures from Wurstfest in New Braunfels

Thanking God for blessings

We didn’t sleep as late as I thought we would. We were up at 7:30 and off for a walk. Evelyn walked around the park with me today and we ended up at the hall where I had coffee and helped set the tables up for the banquet later. Evelyn went home and worked on getting our table service together. I came home and put some more things away before taking a shower and dressing for dinner. We went to the hall and I took three bottles of wine to share. I was able to share only two of them. We had a delicious dinner of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casseroles (2), squash, cranberry salad, pecan, chocolate pecan, and pumpkin pie. We were able to take home some leftovers for tomorrow. We rested in the afternoon and then rode our bicycles to Ranchero Village looking for the man in charge of scheduling volunteers for the Feast of Sharing on December 15. We learned that he doesn’t live in Ranchero so we called from the Hamel’s who want to volunteer also. We will work from 12:30-2:30 greeting people. We then went to say hello to the Bauknechts, friends from Winnipeg. We rode back home (2 miles), this time with the wind. We got home in time for the bike ride in the park. Evelyn walked with Sharon while I rode. There were only 5 of us riding. I had given Tom 12 golf balls and asked him to lay off the Pastor jokes and sacrilegious comments he makes. He didn’t respond in any way. We will see how he behaves the next time we are together. After the ride we came home and watched a Barbara Mandrel special and the Country Music Awards.

Thanksgiving worship

Wednesday was slow. I rode back to the pharmacy because I had only received 30 tablets even though the prescription had been for 90. They explained that the insurance only covered 30 at a time. I rode back and we continued putting things away. Evelyn had gone to exercise and was late in getting back because she had to talk with one of the ladies about tomorrow’s table decorations. We had lunch on our screened in porch. We have enjoyed the temperate weather we have had since we arrived. I took an old ceiling fan to our neighbor who volunteered to take a look at it. He is multi-talented and has made us a stained glass rooster for our NC home. We had expected him to bring it to us this past summer. They had too much to do in other visiting. We rested in the afternoon and then got ready for worship in the evening. I thought we were singing and then rehearsing after but was wrong. I also called Arizona to cancel the insurance on our motor home. I wanted to pay quarterly but they charged our credit card more than the annual rate. We came home and tried to find our passports. We think they are here but are concerned. We told the travel agent to book the Panama Canal cruise for us to leave April 15 from New Orleans. We want to take a train back from Vancouver. I want to say that we both miss our friends who just dropped us last spring. They haven’t even told us what I did to make them stop being friendly. We really miss socializing with them. We came home and watched TV. I also must note that Purdue has accepted a bowl bid to the Champs Bowl in Florida on December 29. Since they will not be in San Antonio, we will have a bowl party that night. We have already invited two and possibly three couples. We will invite our former friends too.

getting closer

We went for walks this morning: Evelyn on the treadmill and I around the park. I went to the coffee table but all the sages had already left. We came home and I left for the recycle station and see John Hamel, the man who plays piano for our worship service. He will play again this year. I then took my prescription to the pharmacy. I came home and showered after lunch and rode my bicycle to the imaging center for my bone density evaluation, took my blood work results from NC to the doctor, and picked up my prescription. Evelyn came to meet me at the doctor’s and rode home with me. We continued trying to get things organized and even cut some of the enormous weeds in our garden. We went to ride around the park with the bike club and then went to choir practice at Immanuel. We will sing at the Advent services but not at many Sunday services. This Sunday will be the only one. I watched a special on John Ford, the movie director. I also ordered a GPS device for the car. A friend has one and loves it. I stayed up too late because I didn’t look at the clock.

doctor and motor homing

We had to get up and go to the doctor on Monday. Since we were going to take the coach to sell, I just drove it. I learned that I need a bone density test tomorrow. I don’t know why but I will do it. We also have other tests later in the season. Evelyn needs blood work in January. She followed me in the car to La Feria and we agreed to accept $35,000 for the coach. We want to sell the Saturn with it but don’t know if anyone will be interested. I honestly believe it will sell, but the Lord will have His way. We came back and drove around the new outlet mall. It is really big and beautiful. We went on to the bank and cashed our rewards check from CitiBank. We will likely not get another because they have lowered the rebate percentage so we will use a more friendly card. They will notice a drastic difference. We had a delicious spinach salad for lunch, and I continued trying to find a place for our extra items. I also set up our little fold-up bicycles and put a for sale sign on them. I pumped up the large bicycle tires too and we took a ride later in the afternoon. Evelyn was in the kitchen making salad dressing and fresh pica de gallo--some hot for me and some mild for her. That is a time consuming dish to prepare. We took our ride and came home for dinner of smoked country style ribs we had brought from NC. We then watched the classic film, On the Waterfront and then some Monday night football. I also loaded the recyclables into the car so I can take them tomorrow when I go to the doctor.

Worship at our home church

We went to worship at Immanuel to see our friends. We also were blessed with Holy Communion. I was not blessed by the pastor’s sermon, but I am sure mine aren’t always very good either. We turned down an offer to go to a local restaurant for lunch and came home for leftovers. We then went back to work on the inside of the motor home. As we were cleaning, our friends from MN came over. I wanted to spend a few minutes talking with them, but it was difficult getting them to leave. I just went on working on putting some things away, and they finally left, having remembered they had some sort of barbecue roast cooking. We were able to finish the interior and the basement compartments. We don’t have much room for the things here but will likely sell many of the items at the garage sale in our park. We still have many things to put away for tomorrow. We just discovered that we have doctor’s appointments at 9 in the morning, causing a conflict with our town meeting and taking the motor home to the consignment RV lot. Yesterday we took some announcement flyers to Trail’s End, giving them to some of the attenders that were willing to put them up in the more frequented areas of the park so people will know we are holding services. We quit working at dark and watched some of the Colts/Cowboys football game and then watched Basic Instinct until bedtime.

Cleaning the insides

Thursday was a leisurely rising because we wanted to avoid the rush hour traffic. I went to the nearby McDonalds and got coffee for me and hot water for Evelyn to use for hot chocolate. We were already hooked up and got right out onto 281 and whizzed right through town. We looked at the hotels near the Alamodome because we might go to the Alamo Bowl if Purdue gets invited. We drove to Three Rivers and stopped to make a can of soup for lunch. We continued and arrived in Weslaco around 4. We immediately began to unpack the coach. Evelyn is ready to sell it so we might try to go to a local consignment RV lot early next week. I would like to sell the coach and Saturn as a package because they all go together. It would seem to be a good proposition if I were looking to buy one. The mounting iron is attached and a tow bar is included. We were very pleased that the weather is very temperate. It is to be only 73 for a high tomorrow. We will try to finish unpacking tomorrow so we can move the coach out of the way. Our neighbors need to back out of their driveway and it is tight for them. We also have the normal amount of weeds to deal with in our small garden and in the front of the house. I saw a few of our friends in the hall when I went to contribute our summer’s worth of can tabs to the collection we make for the Ronald McDonald House. We watched some TV but could only get pictures from the antenna, and they were black and white. I called Direct TV today and scheduled a reconnection for Saturday afternoon. I want to watch Purdue play Indiana but failed to call far enough in advance to get them to connect it Friday. I will have to find someone who will let me watch in their house. There are a couple of Purdue fans in this park.
Friday was spent unpacking. I also called the Texas Trader to see what we could expect to get from our motor home and Saturn together. We had prayed and both came up with $50,000. The owner said that sounded within reason. We will try to take it there tomorrow. I also went to the office to sign in and get our mail. We had quite a bit but no time to devote to sorting it. The neighbor’s across from us have a power washer, and we borrowed it. I was not impressed with the way it “cleaned” the bugs off the front. I am glad that we don’t own one. We got only half the items moved out of the inside of the coach. I realized that we would be unable finish our work by tomorrow. We continued unpacking until dark and then began sorting the mail. Of course we received many requests for donations to charities. We also received some tax bills to be paid in January. We plan to go to Mexico tomorrow for a haircut and pedicure. We were there by 8:30 and were some of the first there. We were surprised to learn that the young man who had cut my hair for three years had moved to Salito. Afterward we bought a bottle of Kahlua for Shirley and made an appointment to have another crown inserted into her mouth. We came back and tried to see some friends from Minnesota. They like to go to New Braunfels so we brought them a plastic pitcher and cups from Wurstfest. They were not at home so we came back here for a salad. As we arrived home, the technician came to install our Direct TV. I was happy because I was able to see half of the Purdue/Indiana game. He said he had connected the local channels, but I can’t get them. I called for help but had to wait for a return call that never came. I will have to call again tomorrow. I continued unpacking while Evelyn went to the grocery. I finished unloading and took some things from the basement compartment. Evelyn worked on making a low calorie soup for next week and a pizza for tonight. It was quite good but tiring. We just laid around the rest of the evening. I did take a picture of the Saturn with the tow bar and protective shield so we can put it in the coach to encourage the sale of both.

Expanding the volunteering horizon

Wednesday was different. We went to the Rafikki center to help them stuff contribution envelopes into some brochures that will be sent out to the likely contributors. Each missionary must raise his/her own support for the work in the field. We were pleased to help with this effort. We had taken sandwiches for lunch and enjoyed a piece of pumpkin cheesecake with a pecan sauce. It was very good. Evelyn got to talk with Susan Kaminski, a former teaching leader in BSF, who now works for Rafikki. We returned to BSF late and resumed making boxes for shipping of lessons. I forgot to mention earlier that the man who mails the lessons told us he and his father-in-law were instrumental in the physical building of the swimming pool at Stonecroft, the ministry retreat center where we used to volunteer in Branson. It was very interesting to talk with him. We left BSF at 4:45 as usual and returned to the coach to rest. Around 6:15, we drove back to Blanco Rd. to eat at a restaurant we had seen called Stonewerks. We shared a dinner of salmon stuffed with crawfish that was delicious. We went to the Best Western to watch the Glenn Beck special quoting many leaders of the radical Muslim world. It was quite revealing although I knew much of the things before. I tried to alert many friends to watch it and sent e-mails to many, but they all came back. It is a shame because every American should be aware of just how dangerous the terrorist threat really is. We hooked up the car and prepared to leave tomorrow morning after the rush hour traffic. Valley, here we come.

Tuesday

Tuesday we were back at the same jobs only I was moved to an area where I could fellowship with the others. It was more fun than looking at the wall. We all looked forward to lunch because one of the volunteers was scheduled to barbecue hamburgers on an outdoor grill. He did a good job and we overate, so much that we brought our salads home for our dinner tonight. We have arranged to volunteer at Rafikki tomorrow morning before finishing our work here in the afternoon. We stopped at super Target to look for Indian Trail cranberry relish without success. We will try the super Wal-Mart too. We also found so zinc percolate for our fingernails. I went to the hotel and watched Dancing with the Stars. Evelyn was too tired to come. Too bad. She would have enjoyed it. The weather is supposed to cool down considerably tonight and stay cool for a few days.

BSF

Sunday we decided to worship at the service in the park. I found out that the service was at 10:30 in a very nice chapel. Many of the permanent buildings are made of very solid stone quarried locally. This one was lovely both inside and out. They had a worship team, just like a real church. The message was more on sanctification than law and gospel but was instructive. The people in the park are loyal and seem devoutly interested in worship. The preacher was a lay minister, like myself, but out of the Baptist tradition. We changed clothes and went off to New Braunfels for the Wurstfest. We had fun getting there, since neither of us want to pay to park. We had to walk about two blocks back to the huge building built for this purpose only. (This frugal spirit has allowed us many challenging adventures over the years.) Evelyn chose a back way in so we walked across a railroad and over a barbed wire fence into a campground that was, unfortunately, on the wrong side of a river. We learned that there was a railroad bridge that we could walk across to get across the river. Just as we got back to the tracks, a long freight train came lumbering by and we had to wait to cross the bridge. I remembered walking across a bridge in my hometown that had only the ties to step on to cross, but this one had a walk way on one side. It was still a bit scary as the old boards creaked and popped as we crossed. We paid our $8 each to enter and went to a stand to share a serving of catfish and curly fries. The price of beer was $4 so I was content with diet coke. Ironically, we went to this huge celebration of wurst (sausage) and had neither beer or sausage. We did dance to a very good 14 piece polka band that had come from New York state to play. They were excellent. The hall had 16 huge beer mug displays that were clever and humorous. I have not been successful in posting pictures but will try these again. There were more than 60 food and souvenir booths that were interesting to visit when we rested between polka dances. We came home earlier than we needed to and packed up our coach and left for the Wal-Mart closer to BSF headquarters than this park. The traffic is so much heavier than it was 10 years ago that I think we would have to spend more than an hour getting to the BSF headquarters if we stayed in this park. We checked with the security guard about our location and set up. We had not eaten much so we walked to a nearby Macaroni Grill where I hoped to get a delicious entree I had had several years ago in Corpus Christi but couldn’t even remember what it was. We don’t think is was still on the menu. We did share a delicious sausage, onion, bell pepper and capallini dish that was more than enough for us with some left to take home. We walked home and I took a pair of jeans back to exchange. I had scratched what looked like gravy from the leg and made a small hole. This plus the tearing of one of the belt loops made me think the material was in some way defective. They were gracious about exchanging even though I had bought them in California last May. I had only worn them about a dozen times. We went to bed too early, and I wakened and wrote this. I didn’t know the time because I will never get back to sleep if I start thinking of things based on what time it is.
We arrived at BSF one hour early. We read while waiting for the work day to begin. We have prayer and then get assignments from the floor director. Evelyn spent the day consolidating registration forms from four packs of 25 into one pack of 100. I made boxes by applying wet tape to the folded cardboard of different sizes. I only taped the bottoms, leaving the top open to be filled. We worked separately and agreed that we didn’t like what we did. I liked mine but spent the day away from the fellowship with the other volunteers. After work, we went to a movie Stranger than Fiction starring Will Farrell. It was really entertaining. We came back and finished the leftovers from last night and a rock Cornish hen that I had smoked last summer, frozen and brought with us. I spent some time at the local Best Western using their Wifi and watching the football game. I came back and watched the news

Hill country fun

Thursday we were up earlier and left for Tom and LuAnn’s. We stopped at the Wal-Mart and learned that the Doctor from the Valley had called my prescription to NC. They said they would have it ready when I came back for it. We went on 18 more miles, a total of 38 from our house and found them. They were ready to go to the SAS factory. We went with them in their truck using the GPS system Tom has to guide us. We were all impressed with the store and the tour of the factory. 2660 shoes are made per day there. The quality control is phenomenal too. We were all surprised to learn that there are factories in Del Rio and somewhere in Maine as well as in at least one other location. Both Evelyn and LuAnn bought a pair of sandals. We then left there and went to the mission trail in San Antonio. There are four missions in the trail but we only visited two: San Jose and Concepcion. They were both impressive in that they were more colorful than they looked from a distance. The Indians they were converting were well provided for in both room and board. We went back to their trailer for wine and chips until time to drive to a local Mexican Restaurant for dinner. We made plans for them to come our place on Saturday for a trip to New Braunfels. We came home and watched a movie.
We got up and prepared to take a picnic to Canyon Lake, about 20 miles from here. We didn’t have much meat so we just had bacon, lettuce, onion, and horsey sauce on great bread. We drove to the town of Canyon Lake and had to ask directions to the lake. We drove past the dam to a park on the lake. We were disappointed that we never found a state park. This one had a gate and charged $5 to enter. Perhaps because there was a beach and several tables for picnicking and a boat launch area. We didn’t know that because we found a table outside the gate and ate our lunch there. We then walked in to the area I just described. It was 87 and we were uncomfortable but spent a good amount of time walking around. We returned to the car and drove to the dam if the Guadalupe River which forms the lake. We walked a very short but difficult trail beneath the dam. We then came back toward the coach but first stopped at a welcome center to learn about the area. We came home to rest and cool down. Evelyn wanted to go dancing so we dressed and went looking for a dance hall. We knew of one in New Braunfels but didn’t want to go there because we will go there tomorrow. Instead we found a young man who gave us some directions to a “nightlife” spot in Bulverde. We learned there was no dancing anywhere in the area so we came back home.
We got up, and I went to the pancake breakfast just to see it and talk to the people there. Tom and LuAnn came at 10:30, before we were ready and expecting them, and we piled into our car to go to Boerne, not New Braunfels! There was a craft festival there and the temperature was a wonderful 70. We saw some very quality crafts but bought only a cap for Evelyn. We had a delightful lunch at the Limestone Grill in the Limestone Hotel. We had shoestring onion rings and some very good hummus as appetizers and we shared a Cajun chicken sandwich as our entree. It was not nearly spicy enough for me but was good. We had to come back early as usual because the Jones’ have two dogs they have to let out. We rested until 5;30 and left for the Oak Ridge Church of Christ to hear the message brought by Max Lucado. I also wanted to buy a copy of his He Chose the Nails video Bible study but it was not available in the church book store. I was a bit disappointed in the message because it was really more relevant to the members of his congregation than to the irregular attender. We came home blessed nonetheless and enjoyed a pumpkin blizzard on the way home.

Wednesday near San Antonio

This is truly a sad day for Christian values or any values for that matter. The Republicans, through all fault of their own, have lost control of at least one and probably two house of the US congress. I am sure our nation can stand this domestically, but this is a true worry internationally. If the new leaders don't recognize the threat to western life and even Christian values, we as a nation are in deep trouble. It is only our faith in the soverignity of God in these times that keeps our spirits up. We slept quite late this morning and then took nearly everything to the laundry. This is an excellent park and has a clean laundry. We folded the clothes after we had lunch. Evelyn had made some pancake batter out of Bisquick, and I cooked the pancakes and two eggs for me. She doesn't especially like either item so she finished the second nearly eternal item in our refrigerator--the beef tip. We then went to the Bible study held here at 1:00. We looked at one of the chapters in The Purpose Driven Life. Evelyn has led studies on this book before. We then returned home to make the bed and rest. What is it about this lifestyle that makes us so tired? We returned to the coach and I did computer play while Evelyn read for a couple of hours. I think we decided to stay here for most of the upcoming few days but must consider where to stay while at BSF. We weren't very hungry so we shared a bag of popcorn and then went off to the coffee house for a midweek worship service. It was fascinating. The man who took tours to the Holy Land with/for Focus on the Family was the presenter. His name is Ray Vandersomethingorother. His message was centered around what Jesus' assignment for us really is. We are to proclaim the Kingdom of God. I don't quite understand yet what that means exactly but will pray for guidance in understanding. The service was presented as it would have been in a Jewish Synagogue in Jesus' day. Someone brought out the scripture and danced around while the audience cheered that the Word of God was present. Those who could reach it touched the book and then their lips (Lord, may your words be my words.) They also repeated a "schmaz" in Hebrew and in English. This is a quotation of Deuteronomy 6:4 that Jesus quoted in the Gospels. The congregation seemed quite familiar with it. The message pointed to the four promises God made to His people: I will deliver you, I will make you free, I will cleanse you, and I will protect you. He even pointed out that the Last Supper had four cups of wine in the meal. The one we remember is the third one (I will cleanse you on the Cross), but He refused to drink the fourth of protection (He rejected His Father's protection so He could be our sacrifice. There was talk of a fifth cup also that Jesus asked to be taken from Him in Gethesamane. I can't remember what the last cup represented, but I think it was suffering. I will have to research that meaning. Regardless, it was a very uplifting message. Also, they were often holding up their right hand pinky, seeming to represent that God used the power of His little finger to free the Israelites, part the Red Sea, etc. We came home and watched some TV.

more traveling

Sunday is always a blessing to go to worship. I called Simon and made a date to visit him at 1:00. We then went off to worship, following the map provided by my Streets and Trips program. Today was All Saints Day, observed, when the names of those who died during the past year are read. The actual day is November 1, but it was not a Sunday this year. We also celebrated Holy Communion, being blessed with the assurance of God’s forgiveness by partaking of His Body and Blood. We felt very welcomed in that setting, unlike some other Lutheran Churches we have visited. We came home for lunch and finished the almost eternal stuffed pork chops. By then, we were tired, so I called Simon and postponed our visit until 5. I vacuumed the coach and watched our former boy, Drew Brees, beat Tampa Bay. Then we went to get some paper products and visit Simon. He looked healthy but obviously was not. His house was not very clean, a true bachelor pad. We came home and I hooked the car and filled the water tank in preparation for our departure in the morning. The latest weather prediction is for rain tonight, and we have enough left to do and will get wet enough doing the things left. We had popcorn and watched the Colts play the Patriots. Evelyn is also concerned as to who we can dress as for the Mardi Gras. We will have to continue thinking.
Monday did not bring the rain predicted. We walked around the campground waiting for another motor home to dump its tanks. Then we dumped ours and left for Iowa, LA. I like to stop there for lunch because they have a good Cajun buffet. Normally they have crawfish etouffee on the offerings but not today. We did enjoy chicken and sausage gumbo (very thin on meat but rich in flavor), crab stew, pork and sausage, dirty rice, and bread pudding with caramel sauce. We went to the nearly dead outlet mall and found some bargains on items we “needed”. By this time it was 2:30, and we needed to get to Houston before rush hour. We didn’t make it but almost any hour in Houston is rush hour. We did get off at exit 781 and found a Wal-Mart after a search. We had to turn into a Presbyterian church parking lot because of the traffic and just decided to spend the night there. It is a small church and will probably have no one show up in the morning before we leave. We won’t leave too early, however, because there will be a going to work rush hour then that we want to miss.
We loitered around this Tuesday because I didn’t want to fight the morning rush hour traffic in Houston. We left just before 9 and literally cruised through town. We went to Schulenburg, TX and turned south headed for Shiner. We ate lunch and went to sample the wares and tour the brewery. We also went to buy 6 of the commemorative Shiner 97. I had bought some 96 last year. They plan to make three more years: 98, 99, 100 to commemorate the 100 years of beer from the brewery. We drove from there to the 281 RV park in Bulverde. We had stayed here several times in years past and liked it enough to come back. We may stay here for a week even though it is too far from BSF. We made plans with Tom and LuAnn to meet Thursday to go on a tour of the SAS shoe factory and some lesser known missions in the area.

Cajun Saturday

Up early for a Saturday of fun. We drove to Mamou, “Cajun music capital of the world” according to the people that live there. There are two attractions in Mamou: Fred’s Lounge and Charlie’s meat market where we buy the best boudin I have ever found. Fred’s features a Cajun band that plays from 8:00 until 1:30. People come from all over the country and even from foreign countries to listen to the music, drink beer, and dance on a floor about the size of an average kitchen. It is great fun, and we danced until 11:30. My sweetheart was really in the groove this morning and we raised la pusiere (French for the dust). We bought some boudin at Charlie’s and drove back to Scott, LA where we bought 30 ounces of frozen crawfish tales. Evelyn will use them to make etouffee this winter. We then went to our favorite lunch spot in Lafayette: Dwyers Cafeteria. We are amazed on each visit because of the volume of food we are given for $6.50. We share a meal and can’t comfortably eat it all. We took part of an enormous chicken breast and some jambalaya home with us. We had eaten all the candied yams and salad given us. We were both tired and spent most of the afternoon in bed. I did watch some football and listened to the Purdue/Michigan State game on the radio. To our surprise, Purdue won. They might just get a bowl bid because they have what should be a pushover schedule left. Unfortunately, they don’t always play well enough to beat a good high school team. I called Trahans and they met us at Randol’s for more dancing and Cajun food.

Traveling notes

We were up and packing early. We have most of the clothes and household items. We worked on the freezer and refrigerator for a while and then made a trip of errands. We stopped at the Junaluska water and sewage to ask that our water be turned off Thursday. I learned later that there is a $100 charge to have it turned back on. The charge to just leave it on is $32+ per month. This is robbery by the government but what is new? We then took our trash and recyclables (with some from our neighbor) to the collection site. From there we went to Dr. McLelland to deliver our flu shot record. We then rushed to the lake to do our walk. While there, we saw the rose flower babe, and Evelyn got to get some advice on what to do on our knockout rose plant. After that we went to get my credit card and I apologized to the woman I threw the credit slip at yesterday. I also gave her a dollar to pay for the call she made to me yesterday. We then went to Wal-Mart to ask them to call Weslaco to have one of my prescriptions renewed. They had to wait for the doctor to call, renewing the script. I will have to get it filled on the road. We came home and worked on the refrigerator (that had been allowed to mildew while in storage) and got most of the things moved into the coach. I then went back to Wal-Mart and tried to get the prescription but could not--no call. I went to the hotel to get e-mail and to the post office to mail a package to Olivia. I also went to Taco Bell to say good-bye for the winter. I took some Halloween candy because I knew we had too much for our visitors. I came home, moved many of the things we have outdoors into the storage unit or the living room, and decided to hook up the car tonight before we went to bed. It was a good thing because our chicken lights did not work. I played with them until I did get them to work. I am glad I finished because there is light rain predicted for after midnight tonight. We ate part of a roast that Evelyn had cooked because we didn’t have space in the freezer. We will sleep indoors tonight, shower and leave in the morning. We don’t want to leave too early because we are only an hour and a half from Knoxville, and I want to miss the morning rush hour traffic. To our surprise we had four trick or treaters. They were cute in their costumes: a lobster, a commando, a dragon and a mummy. We still have candy left. Bad news for fat people.
Wednesday we got up and finished taking things out. The neighbors came to wish us well, and we were off shortly before 9. It was a lovely morning, unlike what we had expected. It ended, however, when the off and on rain began. We stopped for lunch at a Flying J in Knoxville, gassed up and drove to the next rest area. We were both sleepy so we took a nap. Oh, the simple joys of motor homing! We wakened to a rain shower which followed us to Nashville. The nap caused us to arrive in Nashville during rush hour, but we were going in most of the way while the heavier traffic was going out. There was a wreck in the east bound lane, making it worse for those escaping the city. We made it through the city and went to a Sam’s Club because we couldn’t find the Wal-Mart. We like to wander around in the club, but found a couple of chairs like the ones Bob and Carrie sold us only they had attached folding tables. They were only $20 each so we found a willing woman with a membership card, allowing us to purchase the chairs. We came back to the coach, put them under the bed for now and rested until time for bed. We are not eating out and won’t for a day or two because of all the food we had to bring along. It would have spoiled over the winter. We have the beef roast and stuffed pork chops left and will have it for several days.
We were up and off too early. We are on a different diurnal clock because we changed time zones. So we wakened at 6:30 central time. We were hooked up and ready to go. I made coffee and left. We drove an hour and stopped for gas, at which time Evelyn got some hot chocolate and I got more coffee. We drove some more and stopped for more fuel (it is around $2 pg) when I decided to run through the gears. As the Lord would have it, I dropped the fuse I have to remove into the engine compartment. I tried to get it but pushed it out of sight. I had to buy a new one. We drove to within an hour of Memphis and stopped for a shower and lunch. We drove on and went past Graceland to get to the Wal-Mart to unhook the car. We drove back, the time now being 3 PM. We bought platinum tickets for $27 each (geezer rate) and took the shuttle to the mansion. We toured it with a recorded guide and saw much of the grounds where Elvis played and lived. There were many videos and displays of his gold records and copies of the checks he had written to charities in the area. He had a racquetball building, horses, and swimming pool on the grounds. We also saw his car collection and the two airplanes he owned. It was cool but were able to stay indoors most of the time. I learned that he read a great deal but also learned that he, like Solomon, delved into many false religions. He, his parents and grandmother are buried on the grounds. His twin brother who died at birth is buried in Tupelo, MS. As we left the grounds, a worker gave us directions to Beale Street and off we went. We found it without incident and drove around to find a parking spot. When we did, we went to club 152 where there was an Elvis impersonator. He was entertaining and we shared one crab cake for dinner. From there we went across the street to B. B. King’s bar. We shared an order of fried pickles and listened to a very good band. The strange thing is that they were to begin playing at 8. At 8:15 they finally started, causing me to observe that if a band is to begin at 8, they will begin during that hour no matter what happens. We came home by 8:45 thinking it must be midnight. We had some popcorn and went to bed. We hope we will be in Lafayette, LA tomorrow night.
Friday was a driving day. We had bought propane yesterday so we ran the furnace last night. The temperature dropped to 26, and Evelyn had been cold last night at 37. She was much better last night. We dressed and left Memphis at 8:30. We almost missed I-40 because we thought the approach ramp looked closed. It wasn’t so on we went. We drove a while and found $1.999 gas at a Pilot truck stop plus a hot chocolate and coffee. It was a good thing because we could not find a rest area until 1:30, south of Jackson. We had lunch at a rest area marked closed. I was about to drive past when we saw two motor homes parked there. I nearly turned us over getting into the approach ramp. Around 2:30 we continued to I-10 east of Baton Rouge. We turned west and drove into the sun. There was a jam, and we were on the bridge over the Mississippi River. We were both nervous but said nothing. Faith gets tested in many ways. We arrived in Lafayette as dusk faded. We were blessed to find a nice spot and parked for the night. The last time we were here there were FE MA trailers in most of the spots and many local people had taken most of the others. We were surprised that so many spaces were left. We set up and had soup for dinner. I called our friend, Roland Simon, and learned he had just been released from the hospital today. We had hoped to take him with us to Mamou tomorrow morning to visit Fred’s Lounge. He didn’t feel like going. We will try to visit him Sunday afternoon. We will try to contact our other friends, the Trahans, tomorrow. We stayed home tonight to my surprise. Evelyn likes to dance but wouldn’t dance last night in Memphis and didn’t want to go to Mulates for dancing tonight. Go figure. Perhaps she was very tired. Traveling is tiring even in a motor home.
